Be Aware Of Your Environment

The number one tip for self defense is to always be aware of what’s going on around you. That way, if you see any potential danger, you can avoid it or be prepared to defend yourself. Attackers have the element of surprise, and you can take that away from them by being highly aware. More so, try to stick to well-lit areas and stay off your phone if you’re walking outside.

Use Your Voice

Your voice is the most valuable tool you have in self-defense. Shout NO or STOP as loudly as you can. This will draw attention to your situation and potentially bring you help, and it can also startle the offender. Using your voice can also remind you of your strength and power, improve your breathing pattern, and provide you with focus you need to escape.

Learn Vital Target Areas

Know which areas of the offenders body to target when you need to defend yourself. These include eyes, ears, temples, nose, throat, groin, and knees. Hit, kick, or scratch at these areas to help get free.

Avoid Looking Like A Victim

Attackers are looking for the most vulnerable person to attack, if they haven’t already planned a subject. Walk with confidence, stand up straight, and try your hardest to look like someone you don’t want to mess with. Make brief eye contact with people you encounter, but don’t act aggressively and stare them down. Attackers want an easy mark, and they’re looking for people who appear frightened, confused, or distracted.

End The Fight Quickly

If you are able to hit or strike your attacker, try to get out of the situation as quickly as possible. Don’t try to exchange punches. End the fight as quickly as possible and get out of there.

Learn To Set Boundaries

70 percent of sexual violence cases are committed by people you know. This happens because we tend to let our guard down, or are scared to hurt others’ feelings. Make sure that you’re always aware of your environment, even with people you know. And make it a point to ask yourself why somebody makes you uncomfortable. No matter how much you want that relationship with a relative to go smoothly, if they can’t respect the boundaries, than they’re someone you shouldn’t have in your life.

Take A Self-Defense Class

The best way to protect yourself is by taking a self-defense class. There are plenty of one-time classes, especially for women, but the best strategy is to enroll for an extended amount of time. That way, you’ll be able to practice your skills until they become automatic and part of your muscle memory. When you have skills that you can use confidently, you’re giving yourself a real fighting chance.
